School Captains

Each year, our students elect their peers to the role of Junior School Councillors (JSCs) and the Year 5 and 6 students elect Year 6 students to the important role of School (and Vice) Captains. Being selected as School Captain is a privilege and an honour at our school, the student / students selected as School Captains are chosen on the basis of being exemplary students, roles models and Exford citizens.

The School Captains are awarded their badges at a special Assembly and then throughout the year, they work with the Principal in planning for and presenting our Assemblies. Our School Captains are also part of our Junior School Council and work with this group to represent students at our school. The School Captains have other special duties, for example, they greet official visitors to our school and act as guides.

Junior School Council (J.S.C.)

The Junior School Council is a group of students elected by their peers on an annual basis, usually two students from each class (Prep to Year 6 students). The purpose of the Junior School Council is to provide the students of the school with a forum in which they can express their opinions and suggestions on the day to day running of the school. After discussion at a Junior School Council level, recommendations are passed on to the staff and the School Council for further action.

Our J.S.C. decide on and organise the fundraising for charities each year, as part of their leadership training and community responsibility. One of our teachers works closely with this group throughout the year. Meetings are facilitated by the staff member and run by our School Captains.

The Junior School Council has initiated several enterprise projects, such as the daily icy pole (99% fruit juice) canteen during the warmer months and various other activities.

The composition of the J.S.C. varies from year to year, as a result of changing class configurations, with a balanced representation of all areas of the school.

Whole School Assemblies

We hold a ‘Sharing’ Assembly each week (Friday afternoons), which incorporates student leadership and public speaking, and presenting awards, such as Reading Achievement certificates and Student of the Week awards. Photos of our Students of the Week are displayed on a special noticeboard each week. We have special days throughout the year, whole school excursions and a concert at the end of the year which also celebrates the Graduation of our Year 6 students.

We also hold a short Assembly on a Monday morning to welcome in the school week and sing our national anthem ‘Advance Australia Fair’.

We welcome our parents to take part in both Assemblies, particularly our Friday celebration Assembly. Please note that on Monday mornings, the children enter their classrooms at 8:50 am when the music plays and come out to the Assembly area at 9 am.
